Hello all - and Happy New Year! Some wonderful updates from the Band Room to start 2013:

We are taking the first steps with composer Nathan Daughtrey who has been commission by the CHS Band to write a new piece of concert band music.  We have discussed some of the details of the piece and look forward to the rest of the semester working with him to allow our students a glimpse into the world of composition.

Speaking of the world of composition, I was fortunate to learn of a very important link between the CHS Band and the wider world of music composition.  In doing some historical research about our program, we discovered that composer Warren Benson was commissioned to write a piece of music on the occasion of Carl Salina's death (the first Band Director of Coventry High School).  You can read more about the commission here.  The commission project was lead by Dr. Jeffrey Renshaw of the UConn Wind Ensemble and was premiered by UConn in 1995.  This is wonderful example for our students to see the far-reaching connections music can have.

We are currently making decisions on a Boston Day-trip on March 2.  In just a couple days, we'll have our responses in the see if we'll be travelling to Boston to see the Boston Symphony Orchestra (featuring Lang Lang as soloist on Bartok's 1st Piano Concerto), tour a Boston Music School, and work with the Music Faculty of Boston University.  This is a great opportunity for our students, but without 60 participating students, we will postpone the trip and try to find an opportunity similar to this in future years.

Have you heard about Concerto Cards?!  The Band is selling Concerto Cards which gives you FREE ADMISSION to 4 YEARS worth of concerts, all for $30.  All money goes towards the Nathan Daughtrey commission project which, of course, Concerto Card holders will have front row, FREE seats to the World Premiere of.  The 1st round of sales saw low participation rates from students so now is the prime time to step it into high gear and make sure that we are all doing our part to support these outstanding opportunities to expose our students to the much larger world of music!
