Press release from Coventry Public Schools:

Ned Smith, Director of Instrumental Music and Band Director, and the Coventry High School Band is proud to announce that it has commissioned composer Nathan Daughtrey of North Carolina to compose an original piece of music to be given its World Premiere in the Spring of 2014 by the Coventry High School Band.

Mr. Daughtrey will be composing a piece of Concert Band music approximately six to eight minutes in length of a difficulty of 3.5-4 (On a scale of 1-6, 6 being college/professional level). The Band hopes that the success of this piece makes it a significant contribution to the Wind Band repertoire and played by other High School Ensembles seeking to explore new sounds and new composers.

Along with a significant array of professional affiliations and recognitions, Mr. Daughtrey’s music has been recognized multiple times in the highly-regarded series, “Teaching Music Through Performance in Band”, published by GIA. The experience of working on this Commission will provide a needed and incredibly unique opportunity for the students of Coventry to see “inside” the compositional process. Mr. Daughtrey will be available for discussions with the students via Internet conversations and, as funding allows, will make an appearance for the World Premiere.

Numerous funding initiatives have been undertaken through sponsorships and student fundraisers to allow for a project of this scale to take place. The public is invited to help support the costs of this project and also to attend the World Premiere in the Spring of 2014.
